As Pakistan transitions toward sustainable transport, the government has introduced specific licence plate formats to identify Electric Vehicles (EVs). Characterized by a vibrant green band on the side, these plates serve as both a status symbol for early adopters and a tool for law enforcement and municipal planning.
What is the Green Band?
The green band is a vertical or horizontal stripe (depending on the province) printed in retro-reflective green. It is reserved exclusively for battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Hybrid vehicles (HEVs) and Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs) are currently not eligible for the green band, as they still rely on internal combustion engines for propulsion.
Why Do EVs Need Special Plates?
The green plates are designed to facilitate green incentives. Government bodies in Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi are considering offering several perks for EV drivers including free municipal parking, toll exemption on motorways, and unrestricted access to clean-air zones during high-smog periods.
Important Note
Did you know? In Islamabad, registration fees for pure electric vehicles are significantly lower compared to fuel-powered vehicles of equivalent size, as part of the National EV Policy.
How to Get Your Green Plate
When registering a new vehicle, the Excise Department automatically issues the green-band variant if the import documents or local manufacturing certificates specify a pure electric drivetrain. If you have imported an EV privately, ensure the customs declaration documents clearly label it as a "Battery Electric Vehicle" to avoid registration delays.
